Service and Caring Committee
Our Service and Caring Committee collects donations and organizes activities for valuable projects of service and compassionate action. We plan at least one local and one international project each year. In addition, in collaboration with the minister, we provide comfort and caring assistance to those in our congregational family. The caring tasks of the committee include such things as arranging for occasional transportation and meals for congregants in need, making visits to the hospital or the home of someone who is infirmed, or providing flowers and cards for significant events in our fellow member's lives.
Some of our projects have included support of:
Habitat for Humanity
In Spring 2014 several members and friends of First Church of Christ participated in an exciting new project in Fitchburg! Learn more about the Oakland Street 2-duplex project at: http://www.ncmhabitat.org/209.asp.
The Lancaster Seniors
We assisted the Friends of the Lancaster Seniors in recruiting new members to help support the seniors in our community. In Spring of 2013, we organized a senior dinner at the Lancaster Senior Center.
Wheat Community Services/Tri-County United Way
In the fall we put together a basket of food for Wheat for Thanksgiving to help local families during the holiday.
In the winter we run a Mitten Tree collection. This provides local children with clothes and toys for the holidays.
In the spring/summer we raise funds for the Backpack Program which helps supply school supplies for local children.
Other local organizations we have supported include:
Lancaster Angel Tree
We have raised funds to help local residents with fuel assistance and collected food and gifts for distribution.
Battered Woman's Resources
We have conducted drives for personal care items and clothing. Items collected are used in emergency overnight stays for mothers and children when they are in danger and need immediate protection.
We have raised money to help assist families in setting up raised bed vegetable gardens and teach them how to plant and grow their own food. Check out their website for more information: www.growingplaces.org
We also plan an international project each year. Past projects have included support for:
Be Like Brit
We supported this organization which raises money to rebuild an orphanage in Haiti. Check out the foundation website at http://belikebrit.org
