As you may have seen, scaffolding is wrapped around the Thayer Chapel. The work began on May 5th and should take about 6 weeks to complete. The architect, contractor, Paul and I meet every couple of weeks to review progress and make sure things are running smoothly. Day to day operations are ably managed by Mike Mawn and company and all decisions on work orders must be approved by the architect and ultimately the Mass Historic Commission. If all goes according to plan, hopefully everything should be done before the Strawberry Festival and we’ll have shiny new gutters and downspouts, in place of the scaffolding. Our insurance company has requested that we get appraisals of some of the antiques owned by the church. Skinner Auctioneers in Bolton is scheduled to do that over the coming weeks so you might notice some temporary removals of paintings etc. so the appraisers can look at them up close. By the time this newsletter is mailed, the SAT (Save America’s Treasures) grant will have been submitted. We have had many people help with this including Winona Wendth, wife of the Atlantic Union College president. She has a lot of experience in grant writing and graciously offered to review our application. All our efforts are now in the hands of the National Park Service people or the federal legislature. We’re working both angles simultaneously so we hope we have a better chance this year. Peace, Evelyn Bash operations@FirstChurchLancasterMA.org |
