Speaker: Fred Bernard

Fred Bernard was born and raised in Fitchburg and attended Catholic schools throughout his education. Drafted while still in high school, he served in the Army from 1967 to 1970. Soon after his discharge, he was admitted into an acute psych detox center for substance use disorder that developed during his service in Vietnam. He continued to struggle with addiction until 1989 when he received addiction treatment through the VA. Around this time he started attending UU services in Fitchburg and became the sexton of First Parish as well as its resident yoga instructor. A class he continues to teach to this day.
